The Great Land - Alaska - naturalrealm

Grizzly and Cubs, Katmai National Park, Alaska:
this sow grizzly walked her cubs over and laid down in a puddle to cool off. it's not uncommon for me to be approached by sows with cubs in this way when i am out in that area - they have become accustomed to using the rare human visitors as 'shields' to keep boars (males) from preying on their cubs. this bear was shot at a very close distance (285mm) with little time for a tripod. We normally would be maintaining a substantially greater distance but feel relatively comfortable with bears which approach us. The guide knew this bear's behavior very well, and our party of 3 watched her in several other instances during our trip there. we visited there based on a boat, and did day trips into hallo bay each day by a landing craft
